Surf Camps and how do I choose one?

May 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

locations_r1_c1There are thousands of surf camps popping up in southern California! So how do you know which ones to go to?  What  I suggest is to pick one with the following criteria.

1) Do they teach water safety?

Surfing can be dangerous especially when learning. Make sure they teach
water and equipment safety.

2) Are they CPR Certified Instructors?

In case of emergency you need to have an instructor who can save your life. Make sure they are certified in water safety and CPR.

3) Do they have their own equipment?

You want to make sure you go to a camp that can supply you with a proper wetsuit and surfboard. You don’t want to buy your own or rent since you might not know what to get. The instructors will evaluate you skills and place you with the proper equipment.

4) Do they teach at a begginer spot?

You don’t want to learn at a premier surf spot so I would suggest to go to a camp that you can learn at a less advanced area.  A beginner spot usually is a beach break versus  a rock break formation. This will be easier for you since you will not have the danger of rocks or reefs to deal with.

5) Are the instructors good surfers?

Make sure the instructors are good surfers themselves. If they are they will be able to push you into waves and make sure you are having a good time.
