Its hot day in the valley and you wanna go surf! So you go into your garage pull out that dusty old board then wax it up and head out to the beach. Wow its crowed and yes most of the waves are taken. Being a biggner can be a challange if you dont know where to go. There are many perfect breaks in so cal on the right swell but you will have to compete for the waves. Unless you are an advanced sufer you most likely will not be able to enjoy yourself. So, if you are a begginer
I would suggest the following breaks to learn.
Warning: Please go to these surf spots before you hit up the more advance spots like Malibu, Tapanga, County Line, Leo, C-Street, and Rincon.
Ventura County:
1) Mondo’s Faria Cove off of old Hwy. 1 North of Ventura. Warm and Fuzzy – A gentle wave that’s great for longboards and first-timers
2) Hobson’s State Park point break rounds off into beach way North on old Hwy.1 N of Ventura. Best on lower tides and always worth a look when Mondo’s is flat. Quicker take-offs help with progression
Los Angeles County:
1) Sunset Point Will Rogers State Beach. Great for learning. Long sloppy wave that just crumbles. Great for beggiers because you can get long ride our there. Its at the end of Sunset Blvd on PCH. Right next to Gladstones Resturant.
2) Santa Monica’s Bay Street — primarily because it has the best parking. As with most spots in this area, Bay Street works best when there are holes in the sand or during a crossed-up swell.
3) Zuma – This three-mile long beach is a popular summer spot for the Valley kids. Be carefull though sometimes waves break
fast on to a shallow sandbar. Summer time they black ball the beach for swimmers.
4) El Porto:has maintained its reputation more due to easy parking than any outstanding wave quality. El Porto’s a northwest swell magnet, however, and is almost always bigger than any other spot in the South Bay during the winter months. The trick is to find the zone with the “holes,” as the locals call it, referring to breaks in the relentless closeouts up and down the beach.
